Dairy vs meat vs fiber goats

Goat breeds are generally developed for one primary purpose, and it shows up across the whole record: dairy breeds are bred for lactation yield, butterfat and a refined frame; meat breeds for growth rate, weaning weight and muscling; fiber breeds for a fleece, mohair or cashmere, rather than a meat or milk trait.

Many breeds carry a secondary purpose alongside the primary one, a dairy breed that also clears brush, or a meat breed that's also shown. We list both, and our purpose hubs group breeds by every purpose they're kept for, not only the primary one.

None of this is a ranking of which purpose is "best." It's a starting filter: decide what you actually want a goat for, then use the purpose hub's table to compare the breeds that fit.
