Good for
Saanens set the standard other all-white dairy goats get measured against, and commercial dairies favor the breed specifically for the combination of high production and a calm temperament that makes for an easy milking routine. Average yield runs about 2,702 lb a season, among the higher-yielding of any dairy breed here, at roughly 3.3 percent butterfat.
That pale coat has a real cost, though. Saanens are sensitive to strong sun, and shaded shelter needs to be part of the housing setup rather than an afterthought. The breed is otherwise hardy and adaptable, tolerant of a wide range of climates and management styles, provided the sun exposure is handled.
Registrations run modest but steady, a little over 2,000 a year with ADGA, and the breed carries no conservation flag, a genuinely common, working dairy goat rather than a rare one.
Good for a serious milking operation in a climate where shade is easy to provide. Not the breed for an open, sun-baked pasture with nowhere for a white-coated animal to get out of the light.

Housing: Goats generally don't need elaborate housing -- a simple three-sided structure that blocks wind and rain is enough, at roughly 15 square feet of bedded space per animal. The real hazard is cold, damp drafts rather than fresh air itself: sustained drafty, wet-cold conditions can quickly bring on pneumonia and scours in young kids more than in adult stock.11‡
Fencing: Goats are notorious escape artists, so fencing built for cattle or sheep usually isn't enough. A multi-strand, electrified high-tensile fence with hot wires worked into the first, third and top strands is the standard effective approach; plain woven wire works too, but needs an extra interior electric strand to stop goats climbing on it or catching their heads and horns in the mesh.8‡
